Ivan Lewis

Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

Ivan Lewis was announced as the head strength & conditioning coach on February 22, 2019, after five seasons (2014-18) at USC in the same capacity.

Lewis helped return USC to a RoseBowl championship in 2016 and a Pac-12 Championship following the 2017 season.

Prior to USC, he spent five seasons in the Pacific Northwest (2009-13) as the head strength &conditioning coach at the University of Washington.

He worked directly with the Huskies football team and was named the 2013 Samson Equipment/American Football Monthly FBS Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year.

He went to UW after three seasons (2006-08) as an assistant at USC under Chris Carlisle and helped the Trojans win threePac-10 championships and Rose Bowls during his tenure.

Lewis began his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers (2004-05) interning in the strength department under the guidance of Dave Redding and Matt Schiotz, after spending two years (2002-03) at the University of San Diego, where he worked with the football team and other sports.

He was an assistant football coach and strength & conditioning coach at Mt. Si High School in Snoqualmie (Wash.) in 2000 and 2001.

He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and is certified by USA Weightlifting (USAW).

Lewis graduated from Idaho in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in education and earned a master's degree in leadership studies, with a coaching emphasis, from San Diego in 2003.

He was born on September 14, 1978, and has one daughter, Dakota, and one son, D’Angelo.

Thomas Garcia

Strength & Conditioning Assistant

Thomas Garcia enters his fifth season in the Seahawks strength & conditioning department after spending his first six seasons with the club serving as a sport science specialist.

For the 2017-18 seasons, Garcia assisted the medical staff in the team’s return-to-play process, developing end-stage rehabilitation strength programs and assisting in on-field conditioning programs for players returning to competition. Being duel credentialed as an ATC/CSCS and experienced in sport science has allowed Garcia to have a unique perspective in athletic development and performance.

His role is the re-conditioning and performance coordinator within the strength & conditioning program. He will assist in the planning and implementation of all re-conditioning needs for players in the end stages of rehabilitation using sports performance data to objectively evaluate progression and management. Garcia will also assist in the planning and implementation of all alternative on-field conditioning and weight room modifications and needs for injured or limited players.

Mark Phillip 

Strength & Conditioning Assistant

Mark Philipp was announced as strength & conditioning assistant for the Seahawks on February 22, 2019, after spending one season at USC (2018) under current Seattle head strength coach Ivan Lewis.

Prior to USC, he spent three seasons (2015-17) serving as Nebraska's head football strength coach. Philipp assumed the role in January of 2015, shortly after Mike Riley was hired as the Cornhuskers head football coach. Philipp had previously worked with Riley as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Oregon State.

Philipp made a strong impact on the Nebraska program. In 2016, the Huskers outstanding strength & conditioning was evident as Nebraska ranked among the nation's best teams in the fourth quarter.

A certified strength and conditioning specialist, Philipp is also a certified Level 1 Club Coach by USA Weightlifting, in addition to being certified in functional movement screening.

Philipp joined Nebraska after spending two years as an assistant strength & conditioning coach at USC. He was responsible for the design, implementation and supervision of the strength training, agility, speed work, conditioning and testing for the women's lacrosse team, while also assisting with all aspects of strength & conditioning for the football, women's basketball and sand volleyball programs.

Known for his contagious enthusiasm, Philipp was an assistant strength & conditioning coach at Oregon State from 2009-12. He spent four seasons working with coach Riley's football team, helping the Beavers to a pair of bowl appearances. In his final season, Philipp played a role in Oregon State finishing with a No. 20 national ranking. In addition to assisting with the football team, Philipp was in charge of coordinating the strength & conditioning programs for the Beavers men's basketball, wrestling, softball, women's volleyball, women's swimming and diving and women's golf teams.

While in Corvallis, Philipp also served as an assistant strength & conditioning coach for the Corvallis Knights baseball team for three summers, in addition to working as the director of strength & conditioning for the Oregon State Weight Lifting Camp from 2010 to 2013.

Philipp earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University in 2006, where he was a member of the football team. Philipp served as team captain in 2005, and he was twice named the defensive powerlifting champion.

He was born on November 12, 1982 in San Bernardino, Calif.

Danny Van Dijk

Assistant Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

Van Dijk was hired on March 1, 2019, as a strength & conditioning assistant following four seasons at USC (2015-2018) with current Seattle head strength coach Ivan Lewis.

Whilst at USC, he served as a strength & conditioning coach and sport science coordinator for the Trojans football team. He was responsible for devising and coordinating strategies for assessing and enhancing student-athlete readiness, performance and recovery as part of a comprehensive sports performance program.

Van Dijk planned and implemented all strength and reconditioning programs for injured athletes during end stages of rehabilitation utilizing objective, historical and evidence based data and protocols. He also formulated all alternative on and off-field conditioning and weight room modifications for injured and limited athletes as well as working with the Trojan quarterbacks.

A native of Sydney, Australia, van Dijk was the head of strength & performance for the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Football Club and an assistant strength & conditioning coach for the New South Wales Waratahs Rugby Union Academy prior to his time at USC.

He is a certified strength & conditioning specialist (CSCS) and a registered strength & conditioning coach (RSCC) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), is Sports Performance Coach certified by United States Weightlifting (USAW), is certified in the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) assessment by Functional Movement Systems and also a member of the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa).

Van Dijk earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the Australian College of Physical Education in 2009 and his master’s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in strength & conditioning from Edith Cowan University in 2013.

He was born on November 20, 1987. His wife, Alyssa, is a physical education teacher and lacrosse coach.

Jamie Yanchar

Strength & Conditioning Assistant

 Hired on February 4, 2010, Jamie Yanchar joined the Seahawks coaching staff after spending 20 years as an assistant strength & conditioning coach with the University of Southern California.

Yanchar, who helped Seattle win Super Bowl XLVIII after 2013 and make a return trip to Super Bowl XLIX, works alongside head strength & conditioning coach Ivan Lewis to implement a regimen of mobility, stability, strength, and power.

He is responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive strength training programs including all aspects of strength, power, speed, agility, plyometrics, position-specific conditioning and position-specific drills.

Yanchar is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), a registered strength & conditioning coach emeritus (RSCC*E) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), and is certified in the functional movement screen (FMS) assessment by Functional Movement Systems.

During his time at USC, Yanchar oversaw the strength and conditioning efforts for baseball, football, women’s tennis, and volleyball. Yanchar contributed to USC’s national championship teams in men’s and women’s water polo, women’s track & field, men’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and back-to-back national football titles, as well as being a part of 13 college football bowl teams, including five Rose Bowl and two Orange Bowl appearances.

Along with his USC duties, Yanchar worked for the L.A. Rams (1992-95) in a volunteer strength role, the L.A. Lakers (1993-95) as a strength consultant, the NHL’s Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1993-96) and the WNBA’s L.A. Sparks (1997-99).

Yanchar entered the NFL as a part-time assistant with the Cleveland Browns during his time as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Louisville, where he earned his degree in exercise science in 1987. Yanchar earned his master’s degree two years later in athletic management.

Born on December 29, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio, he and his wife, Stephanie, have one son, Tjaden.
